How-to: Wacker WP1540 & WP1550 Clutch Engagement Test

Posted by David Schatz, Owner - DHS Equipment on Mar 28th 2017

While testing the clutch on the Wacker WP1540 and WP1550, take care with the beltguard removed to avoid loose clothing, jewelry, long hair, or anything else that may come in contact with the plate compactor while it is running. Remember to replace the beltguard after testing and before operating the plate compactor.

  • Remove beltguard
  • Put plate compactor on a rubber mat to prevent it from moving
  • Start engine and allow it to warm up
  • Pull throttle to full speed. Allow the exciter to reach full speed for a few seconds, then return to idle
  • Attach tachometer and slowly increase engine speed. Note the engine speed reading when the clutch pulley starts to rotate. Correct clutch speed is 2100 ± 100 rpm
  • If clutch engagement is below 2000 rpm, check for weak springs. If clutch engagement is over 2200 rpm, the clutch may be work and require replacement, or the exciter belt may be binding
