Need parts for your TS410, TS420, TS480i and TS500i starter?
What you need to know before ordering.
Although starters for the Stihl TS410, TS420, TS480i and TS500i cut-off saw are compatible, the parts within the starter are not compatible. There is an old style starter, and a new style starter. Either starter can be used on the TS410, TS420, TS480i or TS500i, but if you are replacing parts such as rewind springs or the rope rotor pulley, you need to know which style starter assembly your Stihl cut-off saw has.
Every aftermarket starter assembly I have seen has been a copy of the original old style starter. The pulley, spring and housing are different than the newer style. Not too many people will buy the starter housing and install their old parts so we will concentrate on the pulley and spring.
Stihl TS410, TS420, TS480i and TS500i Starter Spring Identification:

The easiest way to identify if you have a new style starter or an old style start is by inspecting the starter spring. The original old style starter spring, (pictured left), has a plastic casing holding it together, with notched tabs all around it. The old style spring has a shorter center hub that the new style starter spring.
The new style starter spring, (pictured right), has a smooth sided plastic casing with two tabs that have holes for screws that hold it in place. The new style starter spring also has a taller hub in the center of the spring. That is the easiest way to tell. You can also look at the center of the starter pulley.
Stihl TS410, TS420, TS480i and TS500i Starter Pulley Identification:
Much like the starter spring, the differences between the rope rotor pulleys are the center hub. The old style starter pulley has a shorter hub than the newer style starter pulley, which has a taller hub. These pulleys are not interchangeable with opposing starter springs. The pulleys require their matching new style, or old style starter spring.
