"Self-Priming" Pumps Don't Actually Self-Prime - Here's Why
About this video
Think your "self-priming" water pump actually primes itself? It doesn't- and the confusion costs guys a lot of frustration on the job. Here's what's really going on, in 45 seconds. 👇 🔑 THE MISCONCEPTION "Self-priming" doesn't mean the pump fills itself with water. It means the pump MAINTAINS its prime between uses — so you don't have to refill it every single time you start it up. You still have to prime it ONCE - fill the pump housing with water before the first start. After that, the pump takes care of holding onto it. 🔧 MEET THE FLAPPER VALVE The flapper valve is the small one-way gate inside the pump that makes this possible: • Lets water IN when the pump is running • Stops water from flowing back OUT when the pump shuts off • Result: the housing stays full, so the pump re-primes instantly next time you fire it up ❌ WITHOUT A FLAPPER VALVE Water drains back out the suction line every time you stop the pump. You'd have to manually refill and prime before EVERY start. Huge time waster on the job. ✅ WITH A FLAPPER VALVE Prime once. Keep Pumping. As long as there's water in the housing, your pump fires right back up ready to work. If your "self-priming" pump suddenly stops holding prime, your flapper valve is the FIRST thing to check. 🛠 Replacement flapper valves, pump overhaul kits, and critical components are in-stock at DHS Equipment. We stock Wacker Neuson, Multiquip, Honda, Husqvarna & more.

self-priming pump, it doesn't self-prime. It'll maintain the prime. You still need to fill the pump one time at least to get the water in there. What this does, this this
allows the water to not come back out. So, it'll allow the water in, but it will stop right here, and it won't allow the water to come out. So, this flapper
valve prevents the water coming out. So, the next time you need the pump, so long as you've got in here, it'll start again. Without this, you'll lose water,
and then you won't be able to prime it till you fill it again. So, that is the purpose of the flapper valve.
