The thermostat is a valve in the engine's cooling circuit that controls coolant flow between the engine and the radiator based on coolant temperature. When the engine is cold, the thermostat stays closed, allowing coolant to circulate only within the engine block so it reaches operating temperature quickly and evenly. Once the correct temperature is reached, the thermostat opens and routes hot coolant through the radiator to be cooled before returning to the engine.
