Recoil starters are usually the first part to fail, even on a new machine. They take the brunt of the frustration when a machine won't start and they’re exposed to all the elements. That combination causes them to fail relatively quickly. The ropes can fray and snap, the metal cage around the recoil starter can bend in and cause the pulley to bind, or the recoil spring can pop loose and the rope won't retract. If your recoil is failing prematurely this can also be caused by a misalignment of the starter cup and recoil starter causing the starter cup to rub against the pawl housing. With so many failure points, it's always recommended to keep a spare recoil starter on your truck. Don't forget the starter bolts to mount the recoil starter on either. Recoil Starter Bolt 3 Pack
