Honda 28400-ZE3-W02ZL Recoil Starter Assembly (Lightning Yellow)

The Honda 28400-ZE3-W02ZL Recoil Starter Assembly (Lightning Yellow) is a genuine OEM component designed for GX340 and GX390 horizontal shaft engines. As a direct Honda OEM replacement, this assembly is manufactured to the same specifications as the original unit it replaces, ensuring a straightforward swap with no guesswork. Buyers should confirm their engine's serial number against the fitment table, as Honda supersedes starter assemblies at specific serial breaks, and the correct version depends on the production range of your engine.

Key Features

• Genuine Honda OEM Part — sourced directly from Honda, this assembly matches the original starter in cord routing, pawl engagement, and housing geometry for a clean, like-for-like installation
• Color-Specific Variant — finished in Lightning Yellow; confirm your existing starter housing color before ordering, as Honda offers this assembly in multiple color variants for the same engine
• Fits GX340 and GX390 Horizontal Shaft Engines — designed specifically for these two popular commercial-grade Honda engines; verify your serial number against the fitment table to confirm the correct version for your unit
• Restored Start Reliability — a worn or broken recoil starter leaves the engine unable to crank; replacing it with the correct OEM assembly restores clean, consistent pull-start operation

The recoil starter assembly is the pull-start mechanism that cranks the engine each time you start it. When the operator pulls the handle, a coiled spring inside the housing engages a set of pawls that grip the flywheel, spinning the engine through its compression stroke to initiate combustion. Once the engine fires, the pawls release and the spring retracts the cord. When the return spring breaks, the cord frays, or the pawls wear and fail to engage, the engine becomes impossible to start manually — replacing the entire assembly is the fastest and most reliable way to restore function.
