Dirt and debris are everywhere and will usually fall into gas no matter how hard you try to keep it out. That’s why there are sediment cups. Before the fuel enters the system, the sediment cup is there to catch any type of dirt or debris (aka “sediment”) that may be in the fuel, stopping it from clogging any of the filters or fuel line. It is always good to regularly clean out the sediment cup, as it can fill up and then new dirt will bypass it entirely. There is also an o-ring on the sediment cup that tends to corrode from being in contact with the fuel, so it is wise to change that as well.
