A grease zerk — also called a grease nipple or grease fitting — is a one-way valve threaded into a bearing housing, pivot point, or shaft journal. When a grease gun is pressed against it, the internal ball-check valve opens under pressure, allowing fresh grease to enter and displace old, contaminated lubricant. Once the gun is removed, the ball reseats and prevents grease from escaping or contaminants from entering. When a zerk becomes clogged, stripped, or missing entirely, those lubricated points are starved of grease, accelerating wear on bearings and shafts and eventually causing component failure.
