A lock washer is a hardened, profiled washer placed under a bolt or nut to resist loosening caused by vibration, dynamic loading, or thermal cycling. In high-vibration equipment such as vibratory plate compactors and floor saws, standard flat washers can allow fasteners to gradually back off during operation, compromising joint clamping force and leading to component movement, wear, or failure. The locking teeth or split profile of a lock washer bites into both the fastener face and the mating surface, maintaining tension in the joint even under sustained vibration. A deformed, flattened, or corroded lock washer loses this biting action and should be replaced whenever a fastener assembly is disassembled during service.
