The pilot jet is a precisely sized brass metering component housed inside the carburetor. Its small calibrated orifice controls the volume of fuel drawn into the engine during idle and low-throttle conditions, where the main jet plays little to no role. When the pilot jet becomes clogged with varnish deposits from stale fuel or simply wears beyond its original orifice size, the engine loses the ability to idle smoothly, may stall under light load, or become difficult to start.
