The carburetor float is a small buoyant component that rides on top of the fuel inside the carburetor bowl. As fuel enters the bowl, the float rises with it, and at the correct level it pushes the needle valve shut to cut off further fuel flow — much like a toilet tank's fill valve. When the engine draws fuel through the jets, the float drops, the needle opens, and the bowl refills.
